Word Processing Software


Another U.S. market dominated by MicroSoft, word processing has products from many levels to suit many needs. Many word processors cite their compatibility with MS Word, but the fact is that almost every word processor on the market can save in Rich Text Format (RTF), making them all compatible. So here they are, from alternate versions of Windows' WordPad to WordPerfect, MS Word's dominant challenger.

MS Word
The enhanced compatibility of Word with other programs and even other word processors helps keep this software's lead in the U.S. market. Another major improvement in the latest version is more stability and better data recovery.

WordPerfect
Now compatible with MS Word documents, Corel's WordPerfect offers interesting variations of its major competitor. New macros help fill in data and format documents. You can publish to PDF, and the HTML conversion is excellent. Comes in WordPerfect Office.

MS Works
Although MicroSoft's Works is more of a mini office suite, it can be viewed as a pumped-up word processor. Besides containing Word, it includes Money, Encarta Encyclopedia, Picture It! Photo, and Streets & Trips. The program can share data with WindowsCE and Palm devices.

Texturizer
An inexpensive Windows Notepad replacement with many enhancements. Supporting nearly 30 languages, it can handle DOS, UNIX and Mac files as well as Windows, create customized macros, and embed hyperlinks.

Atlantis Word Processor
Tiny enough to fit on a floppy disk (remember those?), this powerful word processor is compatible with MS Word and many other formats. In fact, its default format is the universal RTF (Rich Text Format). Atlantis Word Processor has customiable toolbars and hundreds of functions, and can be set for variable customized use by multiple users on a single computer.

TextShield
A freeware program (no ads!), TextShield can save in Word, RTF, TXT, HTML and other formats, and even save directly into a ZIP file. Capable of hyperlinks, 3D text, graphics manipulation, spellcheck, etc. Worth trying out.

WriteExpress Easy Letters
This program works like a massive MS Word Add-On program. It offers more than 2,000 business letter templates on 500 subjects. Just search by word or phrase and a sample letter pops up, helping you break any writer's block and state you message clearly in a fraction of the time.
