Voice Recognition Software

Voice recognition software once required powerful computers and clear diction, but recent technology has made the average desktop PC and natural speaking a good enough combination for 90% or better performance. Typically, the software takes the user through a series of vocal exercises, then is able to perform text and data entry and computer commands in any program.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking
The pioneer of voice recognition in 1994, by 1997 NaturallySpeaking was the first practical continuous speech recognition software available at retail prices. Use the software to enter any text or data that you could otherwise use your keyboard to do, plus have the program read your email and documents back to you.

Nuance ViaVoice
IBM developed the first continuous speech recognition software in 1996, and followed Dragon NaturallySpeaking's retail package with its own in 1997. IBM's software was the first to be developed for Mac and Linux systems, and now supports over 10 languages.

L&H Voice Xpress Plus
Used to enter text data by voice into any Windows application, even chat programs. You can add 30,000 new words and phrases to Voice Xpress's existing database of 30,000 words.

Philips Speech Processing
Philips has developed many software packages to use voice recognition. Besides replacing the mouse and keyboard for computer input, packages include voice commands over telephone, and voice controlling of business and household devices.

Companion the Talking Desktop
Here's a different (and inexpensive) approach to speech recognition. Companion gives an interactive personality and voice to your computer desktop. "She" hears your presence and exchanges dialog with you, executing commands, retrieving data, and even controlling functions throughout your home.

Nuance RealSpeak
Available in 19 languages (and counting), RealSpeak works on Linux and Windows operating systems. Use for data input, voice activated appliances, telephonic interaction and text-to-speech.

SpeechViewer
Developed specifically to help people develop better speaking skills, SpeechViewer prints out the words as they are spoken. Users are thus encouraged to improve and reinforce their enunciation, pitch, and loudness.

Terakeet
With Terakeet software, you can develop your own speech recognition applications, or use the existing modules for email reading, data entry, customer service, banking, and telephone directories among others.

IN3 (In Cube) Voice Command
A simple, less expensive continuous voice recognition program. Use this software with any Windows application.
